กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว มีนักเดินทางสองคน ชื่อ จอห์นและจอช จอห์นได้พบเจอเมืองใหม่เมืองหนึ่ง ก่อนที่จอห์นเข้าไป เขาได้ถามกับยามเฝ้าประตูว่า มีคนไม่ดีในเมืองนี้มั้ย ยามฝ้าประตูได้ตอบกลับมาว่า “มีครับ ในเมืองนี้มีคนไม่ดีครับ”
จอห์นได้เข้าไปในเมืองด้วยหน้าที่บึ้งตึงและเริ่มสังเกตได้ทันทีว่าผู้คนไม่เป็นมิตรเอาซะเลย เขาได้เห็นสิ่งไม่ดีในตัวผู้คนอยู่เรื่อย ๆ เขาจึงรีบตัดสินใจออกจากเมืองนี้และไม่กลับมาอีกเลย
หนึ่งชั่วโมงต่อมาจอชได้มาที่เมืองเดียวกันและก็คุยกับยามเฝ้าประตูคนเดิม เขาได้ถามยามเฝ้าประตูว่า “มีคนดีในเมืองนี้มั้ย” ยามเผ้าประตูตอบกลับมาว่า “มีสิ ในเมืองนี้มีคนดีเยอะเลยครับ”
จอชได้เข้าไปในเมืองด้วยรอยยิ้มและเริ่มสังเกตได้ทันทีว่า ผู้คนในเมืองนี้เป็นมิตรขนาดไหน เขาได้เห็นสิ่งดี ๆ ในตัวผู้คนอยู่เรื่อย ๆ จอชได้ตัดสินใจอยู่เมืองนี้ต่ออีกสองสามวันเพราะเขามีความสุขมาก ๆ
นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า บางครั้งทัศคติของเราเป็นตัวกำหนดโชคชะตา
Once upon a time there were two travelers, John and Josh. John came across a new city and before he entered, he asked the gatekeeper if there were any bad people in the city. The gatekeeper replied, "Yeah, there are bad people in this city."
John went in with a frown on his face and started noticing how unfriendly the people were right away. He kept meeting the worst of people and so he quickly decided to leave the city and never come back.
An hour later, Josh came to the same city and talked to the same gatekeeper but he asked, "Are there any good people in this city?" The gatekeeper replied, "Yes, there are many good people in this city."
Josh entered the city with a smile on his face and started noticing how friendly the people were right away. He kept meeting the nicest of people. Josh decided to stay in the city for a few extra days because he was really enjoying himself.
The moral of the story is that one's attitude can sometimes determine one's fate.
